Gamecock Pharmacy Graduate Honored with National Public Health Award

Alexandria Coleman, a 2025 graduate from the University of South Carolina College of Pharmacy, has been named one of the top 10 recipients of the Excellence in Public Health Pharmacy Award by the U.S. Public Health Service.

This prestigious national honor recognizes pharmacy students for outstanding contributions to public health, including efforts that support Healthy People 2030 goals, the U.S. surgeon general’s priorities, and the advancement of the pharmacy profession.

Among the 89 students nationwide who received this year’s award, Coleman stood out for her exceptional commitment to integrating public health principles into pharmacy practice, earning special distinction from the USPHS. She credits her time at the College of Pharmacy for shaping her professional direction.

“Through rigorous coursework, diverse rotation experiences and transformative mentorship at USC, I discovered not only my passion for pharmacy, but also how I want to serve others through preventive care and functional medicine,” Coleman says.

In 2022, Coleman was a semifinalist in the SC Innovates Pitch Competition, where she presented a wellness business concept focused on chronic disease prevention and management. That same year, she applied for a business license to bring her idea to life. The venture, called Beyond Pills, draws on her background in kinesiology and nutrition to offer community-based services such as counseling, consultations, mentoring and meal preparation.

As a licensed pharmacist, Coleman plans to expand her company while continuing her work in a community pharmacy. She is also pursuing functional medicine training to help patients through lifestyle interventions, nutrition and integrative care.
