Dr. Richard Brown to serve as Director of the University of South Carolina Press

The Office of the Provost is pleased to announce that Dr. Richard Brown will join the University of South Carolina to serve as Director of the University of South Carolina Press on October 16, 2017. The Director reports to the University Provost and is responsible for the editorial, fiscal, and marketing strategies of USC Press, South Carolina’s oldest and largest book publisher, specializing in scholarly humanities and regional trade publications.

Dr. Brown joins us from Georgetown University where he has served as Press Director since 2001.  In total, he has 30 years’ experience and has been involved in all aspects of publishing.  Dr. Brown has a Bachelor of Arts in English, a Master’s in Theological Studies, a Ph.D. in Religious Studies, and an MBA in Entrepreneurship.

Dr. Brown is widely acknowledged as a leader in the field of scholarly publishing.  He served on the board of the Association of American University Presses for five years, including one year as president. He was a member of the Project MUSE advisory council, and currently serves on the executive council of the Association of American Publishers/Professional and Scholarly Publishing Division. In addition, for the past five years he has served as treasurer and board member of the Theological Book Network, a nonprofit that facilitates the donation of scholarly books to libraries in the developing world.

We look forward to Dr. Brown’s leadership as USC Press continues its progress in becoming a national leader in scholarly publishing.
