Mary Anne Fitzpatrick begins as USC Provost

Distinguished scholar and seasoned academic leader, Professor Mary Anne Fitzpatrick will assume the role of executive vice president for academic affairs and provost at the University of South Carolina. Fitzpatrick currently holds the title of USC Educational Foundation Professor of Communication and is internationally recognized for her groundbreaking work in communication theory, particularly in the study of social and personal relationships. 

Fitzpatrick began her academic career at the University of Wisconsin, where she rose from an appointment as an assistant professor to deputy dean of the College of Letters and Science. Sciences. In 2005, Fitzpatrick became the founding dean of the USC McCausland College of Arts and Sciences. Her exemplary service as dean was formally recognized by the South Carolina House of Representatives in 2015 (Resolution H.4367). She has since held several key leadership roles at USC, including associate vice president/vice provost for special academic initiatives, vice president for system planning, interim chancellor of USC Upstate, and most recently, vice provost for faculty affairs and dean of the faculty. 

Throughout her career, Fitzpatrick has remained committed to transforming student lives and advancing academic excellence. She has authored seven books and over 120 scholarly articles and book chapters. Her contributions have earned recognition as a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the International Communication Association, the National Communication Association and the International Association for Relationship Research. She has also served as president of both the International Communication Association and the Council of Colleges of Arts and Sciences. 

As provost, Fitzpatrick will oversee all schools and colleges within the university and lead the Division of Academic Affairs. Her vision centers on fostering innovation, supporting faculty and student success, and championing excellence in teaching, research, creative activity and community engagement.
