The University of SC Dance Program will premiere original works by university dance
artists during its Student Choreography Showcase, November 29 - December 2 at Drayton Hall Theatre.
The semi-annual showcase of original student choreography is once again being directed
by UofSC dance instructor Cindy Flach, and will feature a variety of dance styles, many with socially relevant themes.
A sampling of works to be performed includes:
- Sonder by senior Dance Performance major Austin Fry, a contemporary movement work exploring human connection. “This piece explores how as w go through life, we may often be blinded by our own introspection,” Fry says. “Sonder seeks to examine the paradox that we are separate but together, and together but separate.”
- Hope Dies Last by senior Dance Education major Emily Snow, described by the choreographer as a piece dealing with how “if we do not keep hope for a better tomorrow, there will not be a better tomorrow.”
- Anecdoche by senior Dance Performance major Mary Scott, a “jazzy contemporary” piece which the choreographer says is a commentary on the social media-driven culture in which “everyone is talking but no one is listening.”
In total, 9 original works by student choreographers will be performed during the concert. The works were chosen for the concert after being adjudicated by faculty from the dance program.
