College of Pharmacy highlights graduate student research

The College of Pharmacy celebrated its annual Graduate Research Symposium, where graduate students presented innovative research findings to faculty, peers, and guests.

Each student delivered a podium presentation on their current work. A faculty panel discussion followed, featuring Michael Wyatt, chair of Drug Discovery and Biomedical Sciences; Alessandra Porcu, assistant professor in Drug Discovery and Biomedical Sciences; and Scott Sutton, chair of Clinical Pharmacy and Outcomes Sciences. The panelists discussed their research spanning pediatric oncology, circadian rhythms, and the use of artificial intelligence to identify new applications for existing medications.

Students were also honored for excellence across several categories:

  • Charles Yandell Award – Natalie Grantham
  • James Plaxco, Jr. Award – Elizaveta Korunova
  • Daniel Li Chang-Wang Scholarship – Ashita Bhan
  • Ritedose Corporation Graduate Student Scholarship – Abbe Eliasof and Xiangxiang Jiang
  • Dean's Award for Outstanding Graduate Student of the Year – Abby Davies
  • Podium Presentations:
    • 1st Place – Ashita Bhan
    • 2nd Place (Tie) – Natalie Grantham and Benedicta Nashiff

"These students are working under researchers whose work is among the top-cited in the world and have helped move the college to the Top 20 in the nation in NIH funding," notes Dean Stephen J. Cutler. "Our students are recognized by the university, across the nation, and around the globe, and are being invited to present at international conferences."

The college's graduate program, launched in 1967, has conferred 234 degrees: 148 Ph.D. and 86 M.S. Currently, 20 students are enrolled: 14 in Drug Discovery and Biomedical Sciences and six in Clinical Pharmacy and Outcomes Sciences.
