Internal Grant Profile: Peter Binev

2016 Internal Grant Recipient for Visiting Scholar

The world-class faculty at the University of South Carolina is conducting innovative research to not only educate students but also to change the world.

“Dr. Saghi delivered a couple of official lectures. There was a seminar in the math department and another connected to the nanocenter. Every day, we had discussions and invited different researchers from the nanocenter and the electron microscopy center at USC to take part in the discussions.”

- Peter Binev, Ph.D.

Peter Binev, professor in the department of mathematics received the 2016 Office of the Provost Visiting Scholar Grant to collaborate with Zineb Saghi, Ph.D., in August 2016. Saghi, from CEA-LETI, MINATEC Campus, France, visited the UofSC Columbia for one month to collaborate with Binev on two major lines of research. Binev and Saghi formulated a research program aiming at improvement of the procedures of spectral electron microscopy data assimilation and the corresponding mathematical models to allow better reconstructions.

During her month-long visit, they designed the research experiment to be performed later at CEA-LETI, one of the top world centers for electron microscopy. Graduate students were afforded the opportunity to interact with the visiting scholar in hopes of attracting them to this research. Binev says, “Dr. Saghi delivered a couple of official lectures. There was a seminar in the math department and another connected to the nanocenter. Every day, we had discussions and invited different researchers from the nanocenter and the electron microscopy center at USC to take part in the discussions.”

In regards to how the research can be used, Binev says, “There are a lot of applications in which electron microscopy is used. In designing nano materials and composing different catalysts for chemistry, so the structure can reveal the mechanism of the interactions.”

Applications are being accepted for the 2018-19 Office of the Provost Internal Grant programs from faculty at the USC Columbia campus and the Regional Palmetto College campuses. The competitive grants are available to full-time faculty, regardless of rank or track in the following categories: Creative and Performing Arts, Humanities, Social Sciences, Pedagogy, and Visiting Scholar Grants.

The deadline to apply for the grants is Dec. 1 and applications must be submitted through USCeRA. If you have any questions about the grant process, contact Coyet Greene at coyetg@mailbox.sc.edu or 803-777-2808.
