Creativibe: Think Outside the Coop

Interdisciplinary collision. Groundbreaking art. Virtual reality, robots and artificial intelligence. These are but a few of the statements you will experience at Creativibe: Think Outside the Coop on Saturday, March 23 in the Longstreet Theatre, the College of Journalism and the College of Education from 1 – 4 p.m.

Featuring more than 300 students, staff and faculty, Creativibe showcases 100 creative expressions, which represent nearly every discipline across the Columbia Campus. Creativibe is composed of exhibits, workshops, performances and inspirational talks demonstrating creativity and innovation.

Creativibe provides an opportunity to discover creativity across specialties, cultivate new interests, and meet potential collaborators.

“One of the greatest things about being part of a comprehensive university like UofSC is how many phenomenal resources and smart people there are,” reflects David Cutler, director of Creativibe and Distinguished Professor of Music Entrepreneurship. “Creativibe provides an opportunity to discover creativity across specialties, cultivate new interests, and meet potential collaborators. Not to mention it will be really fun!”

Attendees have the opportunity to engage in 60 interactive exhibits and 20 workshops,to be awe-struck and amazed during 15 student performances and to be inspired by eight talks on creative living. The themes for the exhibits include: technological innovation, solving community problems, creativity explored and creativity in practice.

The 20 workshops are a hands-on experience where participants will build or do something. The catch is that attendees are randomly assigned and do not learn the topic until the workshop begins. Workshops will be held three times each day, so there are plenty of opportunities to participate.

Organizers of performances and exhibits compete for cash awards totaling $5,000. Winners will be announced at the end of Creativibe.

Assistant Director of Creativibe Sabrina Habib, Ph.D., explains, “We already know that UofSC excels in research. What we often overlook is how much creativity it takes to achieve innovation. This event opens a window into the ingenuity that permeates our campus.”

Creativibe is presented by USCreativity, an initiative that was charged by President Harris Pastides and Provost Joan T.A. Gabel in 2018, to celebrate the creativity and innovation on our campus.

“USCreativity has been and continues to be a wonderful year of highlighting creativity in all its forms at UofSC and also of facilitating creativity in our students, staff and faculty” says, Vice Provost and Dean of Undergraduate Studies Sandra Kelly. USCreativity began with the Great Gamecock Design Challenge in May 2018 and has included such activities as implementing the redesign of a bus by interdisciplinary teams; all of our incoming freshmen reading “A More Beautiful Question” by Warren Berger; faculty-led design challenges across campus and a focus on creative leadership during Leadership Week 2019.

Creativibe attendees are eligible to win a $100 Visa gift card after collecting six stamps on their event brochure.

Presentation schedules and more information are available at go.sc.edu/creativibe. This event is free and open to the public.
