Research and Teaching Interests

Dr. Winkelmann's research focuses on improving the patient-centered experience and reducing health disparities in athletic training. His research develops strategies for athletic trainers and athletic training students to create and promote a patient-centered environment founded on the principles of access to care (via telehealth), education (via simulation), emotional support (via mental health), and respect for preferences (via historically marginalized communities). Dr. Winkelmann's research line expands on the skills of patient-centered care including the social determinants of health, health literacy, use of disablement models, and patient education with the long-term goal to establish a high standard for equity delivered by sports medicine providers.

Dr. Winkelmann teaches within the professional and post-professional athletic training program. He uses simulation, standardized patients, and case-based learning to develop athletic trainers in his courses.
