I am

By Alicia Bervine

I am from a tree grown in Brooklyn, the A Train, East New York, Lefferts Avenue, Avenue C
From sneaking to Greenwich Village to watch basketball when I said I was at Kings Plaza mall
I am from homemade dresses sewn with love and linoleum floors made for roller skating in the house
I am from little yellow flowers that turn into wishes
I am from couches with plastic covers
I am from perseverance. Tenacity. Boldness. Love.
I am from you better be in the house when the street lights come on and I brought you in this world and I can take you out
I am from Catholic Schools and all day Baptist church services on Sundays because there is no such thing as too much Jesus
I’m from Fried Chicken, Collard Greens and Pancakes for Dinner
From the chattel slave and the plantation owners
I am from you can be anything you want to be and no one can take your education away from you
I am from the southern concrete poured in Brooklyn streets watered with love
I am from me, grown into me, evolving into me anew
I am from God!

Challenge the conventional. Create the exceptional. No Limits.
