Guest Artist Janis Brenner Performs One-Woman Show

Reserve Tickets

The USC Department of Theatre and Dance will present Inheritance: A Litany, an award-winning solo performance by dance artist Janis Brenner, October 4 at the USC Band/Dance Facility.

Show time is 6:30pm.  Tickets are free for all attendees and must be reserved online at sc.universitytickets.com. The performance will take place in Studio 102, located on the 2nd floor of the USC Band/Dance Facility at 324 Sumter St.

Incorporating elements of dance-opera, non-linear theatre and comic drama, Inheritance: A Litany is a one-woman tour-de-force inspired by the passing of Brenner’s parents. Using her own experience, Brenner explores how we inherit not only parts of our parent's physical, psychological, behavioral, emotional traits, but also their objects, thoughts and ways of being in the world.

Since premiering in 2018, this personal narrative has received 4 awards including “Best Production” from the 2018 United Solo Theatre Festival Off-Broadway, as well as 5-star “Critics’ Choice” reviews and sold-out performances. As Claudia La Rocco of The New York Times wrote of the artist, “Brenner's fierce, liquid voice is commanding... a witty, winsome performer, adept at teasing out the ambiguities of any given moment."

Brenner is performing the work while in residence at the University of South Carolina, where she is choreographing a work to be performed by USC Dance Company in their fall concert. Based in NYC, the dancer, choreographer, singer and teacher is the Artistic Director of Janis Brenner & Dancers. She has danced and toured in 36 countries, receiving a variety of awards for her work, including “Best Choreography” in 2017 for Eva Petric’s eden, transplanted. She has also served on the faculty at The Julliard School as a mentor, choreographer, and Creative Process teacher.
