Students’ sense of belonging has long been identified as a key factor in student retention and success. This training will address how advisors can contribute to student belonging at USC. Topics include: examining sense of belonging in the context of academic advising, inclusive advising strategies, and advisor resources at USC.

UAAs will send messaging to identified students about their “at-risk” status in identified courses, and why success in the course is important. This session will cover how advisors can use the messaging to encourage students to to discuss options and potential referrals for the “at-risk” course.

This session will cover the logistics of this initiative and offer participants an opportunity to ask questions and brainstorm effective strategies.

This in-person workshop will focus on providing an overview of this exciting movement within the academic advising community called Appreciative Advising. The presentation is based on the book titled, The Appreciative Advising Revolution. The six phases of Appreciative Advising – Disarm, Discover, Dream, Design, Deliver, and Don't Settle – will be defined. Participants will not only learn what each phase means, but they will also have the opportunity to learn how to implement each of these phases.
