Step Four: Attend Your Advising Appointment

Pre-Orientation Academic Advising appointments will take place virtually on Microsoft Teams. See below for more information on what to expect.

Accessing Your Academic Advising Appointment

Pre-Orientation Academic Advising appointments will take place using Microsoft Teams. All University of South Carolina students have access to Microsoft Teams through their student Microsoft account.

For help logging in to your Microsoft account and using Teams for virtual meetings, use this how-to video.

Note: No academic advising appointments will take place at New Student Orientation. If you do not attend your advising appointment before your NSO date, you will be directed to schedule the next available academic advising appointment.

Advising Expectations

  • Be on time (or early!)
  • Find a place with a strong internet connection- hard-wired connections are the most reliable
  • Have a working microphone and camera
  • Be in a quiet space where you can devote your full attention to the conversation with your advisor
  • Consider having a notepad or other notetaking method so you can write down information from your advisor and any next steps

A note for parents and supporters

Our academic advisors focus on supporting your student directly and expect them to take ownership of their academics. We welcome your support in helping prepare your student for their advising appointment ahead of time by assisting with brainstorming questions and reviewing any pre-advising resources. During the advising appointment, we encourage students to attend on their own to begin building a relationship with their advisor.

Be aware that once your student is enrolled in classes, the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) begins to apply. This restricts university staff from sharing student records with anyone besides the student without written permission. If you have a need to access your student’s records, they may request more information about providing written persmission for FERPA records from their advisor.
