New Faculty Q&A: Blair Payne, Ph.D., BCBA

Tell us a bit about yourself:

I'm a former high school special education teacher and recently moved to Columbia from Austin, Texas. I moved to Columbia with my husband, two-year-old, and our dog. Outside of work, I like to read, cook, hike, and sew.

What will you be doing as a faculty member?

As a faculty member in the special education program, I will work to prepare future teachers to support students with disabilities in their classrooms. I am incredibly passionate about ensuring both special and general education teachers have tools in their toolbox to support students!

What is your area of research expertise?

My research expertise is in providing academic instruction for secondary-aged students with high-incidence disabilities through intensive intervention, classroom instruction, and high-quality professional development.

How do you spend your time outside of work?

I like to spend time with my family and friends. My family enjoys going to the zoo and traveling. In my personal time, I like to thrift, do DIY projects, and sew.

What are you currently reading, watching or listening to?

I'm watching "The Gilded Age," and I'm reading "The Flight Portfolio."

What is your advice for current students?

Don't be afraid to try a new system of organization if your current system is not working with you! Being a student is hard because your schedule changes every semester - if your old system isn't working for your current goals,  try something new.

Challenge the conventional. Create the exceptional. No Limits.
