Faculty Accolades

2016 Faculty Awards, Honors and Recognition

O'Kane

Jason O'Kane, computer science and engineering

O'Kane recently earned a faculty travel grant from the Southeastern Conference (SEC). This program sponsored assistance to faculty who have partnerships with colleagues at other SEC universities. The program's goal is to enhance collaboration that stimulates scholarly initiatives, and by accessing SEC grants, faculty members have more opportunities to exchange ideas, develop grant proposals and conduct research.

Weidner

John Weidner, chemical engineering

Weidner, chemical engineering professor and department chair, was honored with an Education Leadership  Award at the upcoming 2016 Energy Inc. Summit in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Yu

Miao Yu, chemical engineering

Researchers have devised a novel method to boost the natural-gas storage capacity of porous adsorbent materials, which can then be kept and transported at low pressure. The trick is to seal high-pressure gas inside porous beads using hydrocarbon plugs that can be slowly removed to release the gas, effectively turning the beads into tiny gas tanks.

Dr. Hoque

Shamia Hoque, civil and environmental engineering

Shamia Hoque received the Scientific and Technological Achievement Award from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for her research regarding the assessment of health effects and air-quality modeling of nanocerium-bearing diesel emissions.

Chen Li, mechanical engineering

Lasers, rail guns and space stations have unique engineering needs that Carolina research is serving. Joining the faculty of the College of Engineering and Computing in 2009, Chen Li founded the Micro/Nanoscale Transport Lab, which is a world leader in cutting-edge heat transfer and energy production research.

Lauterbach

Jochen Lauterbach, chemical engineering

SmartState chair, Jochen Lauterbach, recently earned the Russell Research Award from USC - the most prestigious annual prize for research given at the University. Lauterbach is an expert in heterogeneous catalysis and his research mainly focuses on novel catalytic nanomaterials for carbon dioxide utilization and combustion exhaust clean-up.

Giurgiutiu

Victor Giurgiutiu, mechanical engineering

Giurgiutiu received the NDE Lifetime Achievement Award 2016 for his sustained contributions to the advancement of non-destructive evaluation and structural health monitoring. Giurgiutiu has published seven books and 16 book chapters. He holds six patents.

Chaudhry

Hanif Chaudhry, civil engineering

Chaudhry, civil engineering professor and Associate Dean for International Programs and Continuing Education, was elected as a distinguished member of the American Society of Civil Engineers. During the 164-year history of ASCE, only 679 people have received this designation. ASCE has more than 150,000. This year, only nine were elected as distinguished members.

wang

Guoan Wang, electrical engineering

Wang was recently named a Breakthrough Star by the USC Office of the Vice President of Research. Each year, approximately one dozen of Carolina's junior faculty are selected as Breakthrough Stars because they demonstrate considerable contributions to their fields in terms of research and scholarly activity.

yu

Miao Yu, chemical engineering

Yu was recently named a Breakthrough Star by the USC Office of the Vice President of Research. Each year, approximately one dozen of Carolina's junior faculty are selected as Breakthrough Stars because they demonstrate considerable contributions to their fields in terms of research and scholarly activity.
