A Letter from the Dean

My goodness: this issue is a feast. Check out the feature on Jacob Shuford, my USC roommate in the architecturally disastrous Honeycomb dorms, and then in the Shandon rental house we called the Monroe Hilton. We had plans (although we mostly lived in the moment, I think), but I don’t know that Jacob foresaw becoming an admiral, a wartime admiral no less, president of the Naval War College, and everything else in his incredible and globe-spanning career.

Read about Bryarly Bishop, who went from studying abroad in Wales, playing with accents, sharing her experiences, to a career in the film, music, and advertising industries. And Buck Jones, another of the many students inspired by Bill Mould (our legendary founding dean). Buck studied in France, and then went on to live in Paris, own a restaurant near Notre Dame serving mostly local customers, and become a professional writer. Also Julia Elliott, who discovered the genre of horror at the age of 12, and then eventually became a professor, creating one of the most popular and interesting Honors courses ever. Julia is a scholar and an author of horror. Finally, you’ll want to read about Alex Thompson, 2020 graduate, who became the first president of the Black Honors Caucus, enhancing students’ sense of community and belonging. Alex has been conducting Ridge View High School’s choir, and this fall will be starting graduate work in choral conducting at Georgia State.

Applause for Valerie Weingart, our SCHC writer who wrote these profiles. And a standing ovation for these inspiring people. Enjoy!
