Distributed Learning

Many of our master's classes are offered online, part of a highly successful network of virtual classrooms developed over the past 30 years. Our program, accredited by the American Library Association and directed by our award-winning faculty and staff, uses state-of-the-art technology to reach students wherever they learn.

How It Works

Courses are offered primarily online, either synchronously or asynchronously (no required live online meetings, though optional meetings may be offered). Some courses are offered in a hybrid format that offers both an in-person classroom and a virtual classroom component, and a small number of courses are classified as fully in-person (this primarily applies to internships, which can still be set up for students not living in Columbia).

Our distributed learning courses feature opportunities to engage with classmates, instructors and the professional community. Faculty members employ a variety of technologies that allow our students to interact, access resources, listen to lectures and complete assignments. Whether students are in a classroom in Columbia or a virtual classroom hundreds of miles away, they will participate in recorded and/or live lectures, and virtual office-hour sessions, combined with self-directed coursework (like readings, discussion board forums, and other assignments) online.

Our experience with campus-based delivery, technology and distributed learning techniques allows us to continue to offer a quality education wherever students are, wherever students learn.
