National Engineers Week Student Spotlight: Matthew Yvon

Matthew Yvon ‘27, Biomedical Engineering
Hometown: Atlanta, Georgia

Why are you passionate about biomedical engineering?

“I am passionate about biomedical engineering because it combines engineering principles with the human body. This intersection creates opportunities to address many of the issues affecting the human population, from disease to congenital deformities and conditions caused by injury or adverse effects.”

What experiences as a student do you think are preparing you for a successful career in biomedical engineering?

“Conversations with professors have helped better understand the opportunities available to me. While much of my most valuable advice has come from outside the university, my professors consistently encouraged me to seek out individuals who could provide deeper insight into areas beyond their own expertise. They have guided me toward better answers rather than limiting me to what they themselves know.”

Why do you believe that biomedical engineering is the best fit for your skills and interests?

“Biomedical engineering aligns well with my interests because I am fascinated by the mechanics of the human body. I am particularly interested in pursuing a career in prosthetics, and this field provides the ideal foundation. I hope to begin research in prosthetics, and an engineering background will give me an advantage by allowing me to effectively integrate mechanical systems with the human body.”

Was there a faculty or staff member at the college who has had a significant impact on your studies? If so, what positive impact have they made on your time at the college?

“Dr. [Chandrashekhar] Patel has had the greatest impact on my college career. He has always made time to help me think through decisions, carefully discussing the positives and negatives of each choice. He consistently encouraged me to aim high and address challenges as they arise rather than letting fear hold me back. This mindset has helped me pursue opportunities I might otherwise have avoided.”
