Ask Me About... Sustainability on campus, BARSC degrees, study abroad, pre-law, and anything coffee related!

Hello! My name is Ella, I’m a sophomore from the south suburbs of Chicago. I’m pursuing a BARSC degree in environmental law and policy, and minoring in Spanish. On campus I’m on the executive board of the ACLU, a peer leader with Sustainable Carolina, and part of the mountaineering club. In the future, I plan on attending law school and having a career in environmental law.

My advice for prospective students:  It’s easy to compare yourself to other applicants, friends, or current students at a school you want to attend. It’s cliche, but true, that comparison is the thief of joy. It truly doesn’t matter what anyone else is doing, what they think, or how you measure up. This decision is yours, and should be authentic to you. We’re all on our own paths, and you’ll end up where you’re supposed to be so long as you focus on what is important to you!

My advice for current students: Take chances and try new things! You never know what will inspire you. This is the perfect time to step out of your comfort zone and challenge yourself. Some things will stick, some won’t, but that’s all part of the process. There are so many opportunities on and off campus to explore what you’re passionate about, so don’t be shy!

My favorite thing about the Honors College: I love the beyond the classroom opportunities. They offer a super unique and enriching academic experience. So far, I’ve had the chance to do service work with a local orchard, attend the Aiken Trials, and go on a Maymester through my honors courses!

My reason for choosing the SCHC:  Throughout high school I was in the IB program, and I really thrived in that environment. I was looking for something like that in college, and found that the structure of honors is very similar. I love having a balance between the feeling of a big and small school. In honors we benefit from small class sizes, personable professors, and a close knit community, but also having that bigger, SEC school experience with student organizations, social events, and sports.

My favorite things: I love waterfalls, swimming holes, coffee, concerts, fresh fruit, the farmers market, and listening to music. I can’t decide if I’m more of a beach or mountain person, I’m a huge fan of both. Also, The Gourmet Shop in Five Points sells a raspberry rhubarb preserve that is the best!

Skill I’d like to master: I’m on a mission to learn to cartwheel. I’ve never been able to do one, but enough is enough. Hopefully I’ll be cartwheeling around campus in the near future!

My dream job: I would love to work for an organization that deals with international environmental law. I’m passionate about sustainability and environmental regeneration, and I want to dedicate my professional life to a cause I care about.

My life goal: Aside from professional goals, I want to have my own horse. I grew up riding, but growing up around a big city it was hard to keep it up since there weren’t any barns nearby. It was always my dream to have a horse when I was younger, and that never changed!
