Pre-Orientation Advisement for New Transfers

Welcome to the University of South Carolina! An essential component of New Student Orientation is your introduction to your academic college and your advisement for your first semester at South Carolina. New transfer students should view the videos below and complete the Pre-Orientation Advising Worksheet prior to attending a New Student Orientation session. 

Step 1: Register to attend a New Student Orientation Session

Registration for and frequently asked questions about new student orientation should be directed to the Office of New Student Orientation.If you've already registered to attend an orientation session, start with step 2 below. All new students to UofSC must attend New Student Orientation to be advised. 

 

Step 2: Download and complete the Pre-Orientation Advising Worksheet

Download and complete the advising worksheet  and bring it with you to your orientation advisement session. 

 

Step 3: View the Pre-Orientation Advising Videos

The videos below will answer: 

  • How will I work with an academic advisor at UofSC?
  • What are the components of a UofSC degree, and what is the Carolina Core? 
  • How and where does my prior credit count?
  • What should I do to prepare for orientation advising?
  • What are additional advising resources I can use after orientation?  
  • What should I do if I want to change my major before orientation?

Step 4: Complete the Math Placement Test 

You will complete the Math Placement Test online. This is a requirement before coming to orientation. Failure to complete the correct Math Placement Test will impact your advisement. You must take the Math Placement Test no later than 3 business days before orientation. You will record your placement test score(s) on your Pre-Orientation Advising Worksheet and bring the completed worksheet with you to orientation. Learn more about or register for the Math Placement test. 

 

Step 5: Register for the Foreign Language Placement Test

The Foreign Language Placement Test is completed in person on campus the day before orientation. Learn more about and register for the Foreign Language Placement test.

 

Other Frequently Asked Questions

All new students to UofSC must attend New Student Orientation to be advised. Students will register for courses immediately following advisement. 

The Office of Undergraduate Admissions maintains a table of the UofSC credit  you may receive for high scores on Advanced Placement (AP) or International Baccalaureate (IB) exams. 

Be sure to request that testing agencies send official AP/IB credit directly to the Office of Undergraduate Admissions. The AP code for UofSC is 5818.

Consult the Transfer Equivalency Tables provided by the University Registrar. 

Be sure to submit official, sealed transcripts for all coursework at non-UofSC institutions to the Office of Undergraduate Admissions.

DegreeWorks is an online degree auditing and academic planning tool that helps you review your progress toward degree completion. DegreeWorks will show all requirements for your intended major, including Carolina Core requirements. Prior coursework received and processed by the University will also appear. You can access DegreeWorks by logging in to Self-Service Carolina and selecting the student tab.

Learn more about the Carolina Core, its requirements, and its courses. Please Note: some majors require specific Carolina Core coures. Not all courses listed on the website may apply to all majors. Your advisor will share more at orientation.
