Title IX 50th Anniversary and Commemoration
Signed into federal law by President Richard Nixon fifty years ago in 1972, Title
IX transformed access to educational opportunities for girls and women in the United
States. Applicable also to equity in athletics at the collegiate level, Title IX tenets
exist to help guarantee that “No person in the United States shall, on the basis of
sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected
to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial
assistance” (From the Title IX legislation). In 2022, we pause to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of this revolutionary legislation
that has changed the lives of girls and women for the better.
