Creating an Inclusive, Accessible Digital Experience
By creating accessible digital content, we make the University of South Carolina a
better place to learn, work and succeed for all of our community members.
Committing to Digital Accessibility at UofSC
A structured plan is under way to make digital accessibility a core part of our inclusive
campus culture and an integral part of all university technology.
When Does It Start?
The plan has officially kicked off as of early 2020 and does not have an end date.
Instead, it will evolve over time to help us continue to meet accessibility standards
into the future.
Who Owns It?
The plan is led by the CIO and Vice President of Information Technology as well as
the University Accessibility Committee.
The Legal Requirement
In January 2019, the U.S. Supreme Court upheld the decision from the Ninth Circuit
Court of Appeals that organizations can be sued for inaccessible digital content in
the case of Robles v. Domino's Pizza, LLC.
UofSC and the U.S. Office of Civil Rights
In 2019, the University of South Carolina closed a case with the United States Office
of Civil Rights requiring remediation of accessibility issues found in university
sites and online services. The case remains closed only while a plan is in action
to make accessibility an inherent part of every digital experience at the university.
What It Means for You
Far-reaching inclusivity and accessibility requires the help of everyone who creates,
purchases and uses our digital products and services.
If you create, edit, purchase or manage digital content at the University of South
Carolina, you will not be expected to have all of your accessibility issues fixed
overnight. We will be continually working toward improving our overall digital accessibility
as a university.
sc.edu Site Managers and Editors
Those creating, editing or managing any content that will be published to sc.edu will
participate in digital accessibility training tailored to the specific tasks they
complete on a regular basis. This training will not delve into code or anything more
technical than what is required for regular sc.edu updates.
Anyone who creates documents, media files or other content that may be published to a
university site, social media channel, or other digital experience will be responsible
for ensuring their content is accessible. Content creators will complete digital accessibility
training tailored to only the specific tasks they complete on a regular basis.
Faculty & Course Instructors
Anyone instructing a university course will be responsible for creating accessible
digital course materials. Faculty and instructors will receive guidance and support
for the specific types of materials they create.
Business Platform Owners
Any member of university faculty or staff starting a project that requires creating
or purchasing new technology is responsible for ensuring that technology is accessible. Business
platform owners are also required to report new technology to the Accessibility Committee
before procurement or creation for an expert accessibility review.
Students and the University Community
If you are struggling to access information via a digital product, service or experience
offered by the university, please file a report below so we can look into the issue.
If you manage a digital product or service at the university, you will receive a regular
accessibility report. The report tells you what accessibility issues you have, if
any, and will direct you to instructions for fixing those issues. These reports are
created from manual accessibility testing and are meant to supplement any automated
reports you may also be using (SiteImprove, Blackboard Ally, etc).
