Image Gallery Alt Text

You will need to offer alt text for every image in your image gallery or your single image gallery callout because they function as links, and every linked image must have alt text.

Adding & Replacing Alt Text

Be sure to add alt text when you build your gallery and update the alt text every time you change out an image.

  1. Select the "Edit" tab, then click "Images" in the left sidebar to jump down to your uploaded images.
    • The Asset edit page. At the top, the Edit tab option is emphasized with a garnet rectangle, next to the Preview tab on the left and More options tab on the right. On the far right are buttons for Save, a yellow lightbulb icon for checked out content, a green Publish button with a dropdown arrow, an expand icon, and an ellipsis indicating more menu options. In the left column, a tab for Images is also surrounded by a garnet rectangle, below a tab for Gallery Options. The main body shows a section for Gallery Options with Maximum Thumbnail Size set to 100 W x 100 H, with a blank Thumbnail Preview section.

  2. Add your alt text to the "Description" box. Click "Save" at the top of the page to confirm.
    • The lower section of the Asset edit page. Across the top are four tab options, Preview, Edit, Properties, and Versions. On the far right are buttons for Save, a yellow lightbulb icon for checked out content, a green Publish button with a dropdown arrow, an expand icon, and an ellipsis indicating more menu options. In the Images section, three image information tiles for study abroad images are shown with blank fields for Title, Description, Caption, and Link. The first tile has the Description field highlighted with a garnet square.

Captions & Alt Text

Most of the time, alt text and captions serve very different purposes. However, if your caption conveys all of the visual information found in your image, you can mark the image as decorative to keep a screen reader from reading the same description twice.
