The School of Information Science held its 2025 spring and summer graduation ceremony in the Russell House Theater on May 8, 2025.
Three students earned a Ph.D., 74 earned MLIS degrees and 36 earned certificates in specialized study.
CIC Dean Tom Reichert gave the opening remarks, recognizing the contributions of the family members present in the success of their graduates and acknowledging the future impact the graduates will have.
“This program is really built to challenge you. But it also possesses a heartfelt desire to see you succeed. And you have,” said Reichert. “Today, we're celebrating the completion of your time in this storied program and recognizing the difference that you will make in our communities.”

The keynote speaker for the ceremony was alumna Lisa O’Connor, Ph.D., chair and associate professor, Library and Information Science, University of North Carolina Greensboro. She spoke on the topic of service, the kind that makes people feel like they are part of a greater whole.
“My observation right now is that people are starving for service and for what happens when they get real service,” said O’Connor. “When real service happens, people end up feeling seen. They end up being connected, and they end up developing a sense of belonging.”
School of Information Science Director Lyda Fontes McCartin gave the closing remarks.
“You are entering your professional lives at an interesting time, at a time that calls for the very qualities that you've developed: creativity, adaptability, critical thinking and unwavering dedication to core values,” McCartin said.
“The skills and values that you've developed here will serve you and your communities well, regardless of what challenges lie ahead. Your communities need you, and I'll speak for everybody on the faculty when I say that we believe the future of our resilient profession is in excellent hands.”
