Alumna writes encouraging words to graduating seniors

Hazel Mathieu, ('20, PR)
Account Executive II
Justworks, New York

I work in tech sales for a payroll and benefits platform geared towards small businesses and startups. This is definitely not the road I saw myself going down, but I couldn’t be happier! The pressure to get a job right out of college can be overwhelming, especially as you see your classmates securing jobs. It’s easy to lose sight of what’s important.

Graduating in 2020 was the best blessing in disguise for my career. While the lack of job opportunities was scary, it gave me a moment to step back and reflect.

While I majored in public relations (and loved it), I realized that what truly filled my cup was getting to work with a wide variety of people and businesses, and to act as a true consultant in their success. My work ethic and demeanor made sales an obvious choice. I knew I also wanted a company in line with my personal values and which had a product I believed in.

I cast a wide net with applications once companies finally began hiring, went into interviews with my priorities in mind and was fortunate enough to have several offers to evaluate. Since I started at the company, I’ve been promoted numerous times and have seen much personal and professional development. I truly love my day to day, and I’m so excited to see where this role takes me.

My biggest piece of advice to any student is to remember that there are many more career paths outside of what you may have considered for yourself and seen others take. Don’t limit yourself to the obvious choices — think about what stimulates your mind and fulfills you and find a company that aligns with that. Whether it be a role at a large corporation or a mission-driven startup, there are more routes to success than you can imagine!

Challenge the conventional. Create the exceptional. No Limits.
