Provides scholarships for U.S. undergraduate students with demonstrated financial need to study abroad in East or Southeast Asia.
Applicants must have applied or have been accepted to a study abroad based program in: Cambodia, China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Laos, Macao, Malaysia, Mongolia, Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, Vietnam. A multi-country program is eligible only if the applicant will spend at least 8 weeks in one of the countries stated above and will have intensive language study during that period.
Please note the April deadline is for study abroad for all of the 2019-2020 academic year (summer 2019, fall 2019, spring 2020, and academic year).
Also, applicants must currently receive need-based financial aid or demonstrate a verifiable need for financial assistance to participate in the proposed study abroad program. The applicant is required to submit the Estimated Family Contribution (EFC) figure, calculated through FAFSA, with the statement of financial need through the online Freeman-ASIA application.
Please note: USC students should contact Ashleigh Speaks in the Financial Aid Office to verify their financial need. Students applying for the Freeman-ASIA must also complete the USC Study Abroad Application due to the Study Abroad Office. The deadline for doing so is March 1 (Feb 15 for programs that begin in the summer) for fall or academic year programs. If your program begins the following spring, you must meet their Oct. 1 deadline in the year you will be studying abroad. See link to Forms and Applications at sc.edu/studyabroad
