Impactful experience:
Being a founding member of the UofSC chapter of MAP, the only undergraduate-led organization
of its kind in the country.
Story:
When I enrolled at UofSC as a Classics and Philosophy double major, my vision for
my future was fairly conventional. By the end of freshman year, however, a shift had
already begun. A lifelong love of comics compelled me to check Craig Thompson’s masterpiece,
Blankets, out of Thomas Cooper Library and thereafter his follow-up, Habibi. My curiosity
piqued by a chance encounter with Islamic calligraphy and illumination, I applied
last minute to a summer program at a military school. After one year I was taking
poetry recommendations and ney lessons in Amman, Jordan. Another and I was translating
poetry. Thank you to Mr. Stamps and OFSP for your abundant support and to my professors
for your patience and guidance.
Post-graduate plans:
Avery will study Biblical Hebrew this summer before pursuing a master’s degree in
History and Philosophy of Science and Medicine at Cambridge.
Career goals/professional aspirations:
Avery aspires to become a professional philosopher, historian, and philologist concerned
with understanding the development and transformation of scientific knowledge in antiquity
and the Middle Ages as well as ethical issues surrounding modern science and medicine.
