The Dissertation Innovation Fellowship provides a year of support for doctoral students in the humanities and interpretive social sciences preparing to embark on innovative dissertation research projects. Recipients will use the fellowship to develop and prepare for innovative dissertation work and should not yet have made significant process in dissertation research and writing.
The fellowship is designed to intervene at the formative stage of dissertation development, before research and writing are advanced. The program seeks to expand the range of research methodologies, formats, and areas of inquiry traditionally considered suitable for the dissertation, with a particular focus on supporting scholars who can build a more diverse, inclusive, and equitable academy.
The program supports projects that push the traditional approaches to dissertation research in new directions. The strongest applications will show evidence of thoughtful plans for engaging the sources, resources, scholars, and communities – on campus and/or off – necessary to advance their projects.
Applicants must be enrolled in a PhD program in the humanities or interpretive social sciences. They must have completed at least two years in their programs and have finished all required coursework, and must have at least two years left in their program at the start of the fellowship period.
$50,000 ($40,000 stipend plus additional funds for project costs, research, and mentor support)
