Sociologists for Women in Society offer three awards and for PhD students who are women and non-binary to support their graduate studies and research.
The Beth B. Hess Memorial Scholarship is awarded to an advanced sociology Ph.D. student, preferably in the last year of their program, who began their study in a community college or technical school.
A student advanced to candidacy (ABD status) in an accredited Ph.D. program in sociology is eligible to apply if they studied at a U.S. two-year college either part-time or full-time for the equivalent of at least one full academic year that was not part of a high-school dual-enrollment or enrichment program. Students who attended the international equivalent of a U.S. two-year college are also welcome to apply.
Barbara Rosenblum Dissertation Scholarship: Supports doctoral research in sociology, anthropology, psychology, and related fields on women’s experience of breast and other reproductive cancers and the prevention of these cancers. One award per cycle. The dissertation candidate must have a feminist orientation and be sensitive to studying reproductive cancers and their impact on diverse groups of women, including those of diverse racial and ethnic backgrounds, socioeconomic status, sexual orientation, language, religion, geographical areas, and other cultural perspectives. The candidate must have an approved prospectus for doctoral research at the time of award submission. The scholarship prefers to support social scientists or researchers who plan to present their findings and applications to general audiences.
The Esther Ngan-ling Chow and Mareyjoyce Green Scholarship offers support to women and non-binary scholars of color who are from underrepresented or marginalized groups and are studying concerns that women of color face domestically and/or internationally or transnationally. Applicants must also demonstrate financial need.
Applicants must identify as a woman or non-binary scholar of color from a racial/ethnic group facing racial discrimination in the United States.
Dissertation must be sociologically relevant scholarship that addresses the concerns of women of color, in the United States and/or abroad.
Applicants must have completed their research and be in the early stages of writing a dissertation (have not exceeded 12 months of writing).
