About this Fellowship

Fellowships for individuals who want to spend a year abroad in an intensive language program to improve their Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Indonesian, Khmer, Thai, or Vietnamese language skills.

The Blakemore Foundation was established to encourage the advanced study of Asian languages and to improve the understanding of Asian fine arts in the United States. This award provides several different types of language grants to students with an undergraduate degree and an advanced command of their chosen language. Recipients must apply independently to an approved language program.

The Foundation is looking for exceptional candidates who will make significant contributions to their career field. The ideal candidate is someone with stellar grades, outstanding recommendations, and a demonstrated commitment to the Asian country and language. Beyond commitment, they are looking for a mature purpose: a career path that will require and benefit from fluency in that Asian language throughout that individual's life.

Candidates pursuing careers which will involve the regular use of an East or Southeast Asian language in fields such as academia, STEM, international business, accounting, law, medicine, journalism, architecture, teaching, NGO and government service, and similar fields are encouraged to apply.

The Blakemore Kingfisher Art History Fellowship offers intensive Chinese or Korean language study funding for individuals who have demonstrated intent to pursue an academic career in Chinese or Korean art history prior to the 20th century.

Deadlines are typically in late December. Refer to the program website for details.
