Logan Anderson, Adelyn Ayler, Myani Baldwin, Grace Blumhardt, Kalyn Brown, Tam Dinh,
Bradley Gittens, Mia Hernandez, Jemyah Jones, Elijah Lane, Abby Oliver, Erin Owcarz,
Nidhi Panchal, Abby Still and Saidah Wade have earned the 2025 – 2026 Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship for study abroad. These 15 University of South Carolina students receive funding
from the Department of State to support the cost of their academic programs and will
serve as cultural ambassadors in their host countries.
Why it matters
The Benjamin A. Gilman Scholarship provides up to $5,000 for students with demonstrated
financial need who plan to study abroad. By funding study abroad programs of any length,
the Gilman Scholarship helps to ensure that students can have impactful international
experiences that align with their interests, goals and academic schedule. Students
can receive additional funding for critical-need language study or STEM research projects.
Who they are

Rising senior Capstone scholar and first-generation student Logan Anderson studies history. Anderson has conducted undergraduate research on World War II, and
he will use funding from the Gilman Scholarship to study abroad in Germany. He looks
forward to learning more about the country’s history and politics. Anderson plans
to pursue a career in public history and hopes to work in museums.

Adelyn Ayler is a rising SCHC junior majoring in neuroscience. This summer, she will travel to
England, Spain and Italy as part of the AIFS Comparative Healthcare Program. She looks
forward to analyzing the healthcare systems in these countries and contrasting their
approaches to the United States’. Ayler is involved in many pre-health organizations
on campus and founded Gamecock Emergency Medical Students. As an aspiring physician,
Ayler will leverage the knowledge she gains from her study abroad experience as she
provides for her future patients.

First-generation student Myani Baldwin is a rising senior political science major. She will participate in the Business
and Culture in Morocco Maymester course. Baldwin is excited to explore Moroccan business
practices, culture and history. She will draw upon these cross-cultural experiences
in her career as a civil rights attorney and elected official. In these roles, Baldwin
hopes to serve diverse communities.

Grace Blumhardt is a rising senior public relations major. The Gilman Scholarship will support her
summer study abroad program in Barcelona, Spain. This experience will enable her to
gain global perspectives and make international connections, preparing her for a career
in public relations. When she returns to USC in the fall, Blumhardt will support her
fellow Gamecocks as a Carolina Experience Peer Leader.
Kalyn Brown is a rising senior first-generation student majoring in public health. She will utilize
the Gilman Scholarship to participate in the Understanding Health Disparities through
History, Culture and Policy Maymester in South Africa. After her experience abroad,
Brown will participate in the Pee Dee AHEC Summer Undergraduate Internship Program
to further her public health knowledge. She aspires to a career in public health administration
or policy.

Rising junior Tam Dihn is a first-generation student in the Honors College. A biological sciences and psychology
double-major, Dihn will study abroad in Vietnam for a Maymester experience. She is
particularly excited to study in her motherland for the first time. After graduating
from USC, she plans to pursue graduate degrees in healthcare or education.

Bradley Gittens is a rising senior majoring in theatre and a member of the United States Marine Corps
Reserves. This summer, he will travel to the United Kingdom to continue his theatrical
studies. On campus, Gittens volunteers at the Gamecock CommUNITY Shop. He also supports
his peers as a social engagement coach through CarolinaLIFE and is the Student Government’s
Secretary of Transfer Student Affairs. Gittens aspires to an acting career through
which he hopes to serve as a positive role model to children.
Mia Hernandez will travel to the Czech Republic, Portugal and Spain for her Gilman-funded study
abroad experience. Jemyah Jones will use the Gilman Scholarship to study in Spain and Portugal. Elijah Lane will study abroad in Spain. Abby Oliver is currently using her Gilman scholarship to study abroad in Italy. Erin Owcarz will study abroad in Germany.

Rising junior Nidhi Panchal studies biological sciences. She will participate in the Infections Diseases and
Health Disparities Maymester course in Switzerland. Panchal will use the scholarship
funding to learn more about laboratory science, as well as international approaches
to addressing infectious diseases and health disparities. After returning from the
Maymester, Panchal will volunteer at the Lexington Medical Center. She hopes to become
a medical laboratory scientist and earn a master’s in health care administration.

Abby Still is a rising senior English major. Her Gilman-funded experience will take her to Ireland
and the UK for a Maymester, and she looks forward to studying literature and creative
writing in the home cities of some of her favorite authors. Still is also passionate
about history and archival work; she’s excited to visit the British Library during
her time abroad and connect that experience to her work at USC’s South Caroliniana
Library. Her career goals include being an archivist or special collections librarian,
which blends her interests in history, writing and inclusive education.

Rising senior South Carolina Honors College student Saidah Wade studies public health with a law and society minor. She will gain global perspectives
on the intersection of public health and law by participating in an upcoming winter-
or summer-term study abroad program. Wade recently completed a research internship
with the NIH R25 Emerging Scholarship Program, investigating state-level variations
in maternal health policies in the United States. She aspires to be a medical malpractice
attorney and to focus on health policy.
