First-year international studies and languages, literatures and cultures (Russian) major Maddie Bailey will travel to Kyrgyzstan this summer for intensive language study. The Capstone Scholar has earned the 2026 Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) for Russian. Funded by the U.S. Department of State, this program provides American undergraduates and graduate students the opportunity to spend eight to ten weeks abroad studying languages that are essential to U.S. national security and economic prosperity.

Through this immersive summer program, participants develop cultural competence and valuable language skills that are essential for building international connections. Bailey’s award reflects the University of South Carolina’s commitment to fostering globally minded scholars who can help tackle the world’s most pressing issues.
Meet our scholar
In just her first year at USC, Bailey has already made an impact on the campus community. She is the founder and president of USC’s Political Converse Club, which seeks to find common ground between polarized viewpoints. Bailey also aims to start a chapter of Sigma Iota Rho, an international studies honor society. She looks forward to improving her Russian this summer, learning more about Central Asian culture, traditions and strengthening her cross-cultural communication skills. Bailey plans to leverage these abilities through a career in diplomacy or international security.
