A record-breaking 20 University of South Carolina students have earned the 2026 – 2027 Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship for study abroad. Supported by the Department of State, these 20 students will serve
as cultural ambassadors in their host countries.
Why it matters
The Benjamin A. Gilman Scholarship provides up to $5,000 for students with demonstrated
financial need who plan to study abroad. By funding study abroad programs of any length,
the Gilman Scholarship helps to ensure that students can have impactful international
experiences that align with their interests, goals and academic schedule. The Gilman-McCain
Scholarship provides funding for dependents of active-duty military personnel. Students
can receive additional funding for critical-need language study or STEM research projects,
coursework or internships.
