Navy veteran combines experience abroad with Moore School MBA skills to lead international teams

Nov. 10, 2020

Moore School alumnus Matt Pangle (’18 MBA) uses his experiences from being in the U.S. Navy along with skills from the Moore School’s Professional MBA program in his role at Global Lending Services LLC.

Pangle enlisted in the Navy after receiving his undergraduate degree because he wanted to serve his country and “become part of something much bigger than myself.”

“Both of my grandfathers were in the Navy, so I grew up hearing sea stories and learning about the different experiences they had during their service,” he added.

The leading petty officer for navigation aboard a guided missile destroyer, Pangle traveled more than 100,000 nautical miles and to 11 different countries during his three years in the Navy.

“Being in this leadership role provided me with the foundation for many of the skills I utilize in the workplace today such as effective communication, problem solving and time management,” Pangle said.

After being honorably discharged, Pangle returned to his home state of South Carolina to begin his professional career in financial services. He spent a few years working as an auditor before deciding he wanted to pursue a master’s degree.

“I realized that furthering my education was essential to strengthening my business acumen and to offer me a competitive advantage amongst a highly qualified workforce within upstate South Carolina,” Pangle said. “Selecting a school with a program that would best cater to my needs as a working professional as well as provide the best return on investment upon graduation was imperative. To me, an MBA is the most versatile advanced degree, so there was no better choice than the Moore School’s Professional MBA program. The flexibility of the classes as well as the reputability of the professors [at the Moore School] are second to none.”

Wanting to utilize his experience from traveling to places like Southeast Asia and the Persian Gulf during his military deployment, Pangle chose to specialize in international business through the Professional MBA program. This customized aspect of his degree provided Pangle with skills he uses every day as a senior manager of outsourcing at Global Lending Services LLC, a financial technology automotive lending firm.

“Within Global Lending Services, I am responsible for overseeing all aspects of loss mitigation, policy compliance and quality assurance of an assigned business segment that is outsourced to several vendor partners across international site locations in the Dominican Republic, Grenada, and Philippines,” Pangle said. “My day-to-day tasks focus on driving operational performance with each vendor team that meets or exceeds company expectations that will in turn provide our customers with a best in class experience.”

With a large portion of his role focused on managing teams remotely, Pangle said he relies heavily on reporting and data analysis to give him visibility into key performance indicators and site production efforts, which are critical for effective oversight and sound decision-making.

“These [analysis techniques] are skills that I learned and developed from day one in the Professional MBA program,” he added.

Pangle said that one Professional MBA course has been extremely useful in his day-to-day duties. The course, Quantitative Methods in Business, focuses on applying probability and trend analysis to make informed business decisions based on actionable data.

“My biggest takeaway [from the Professional MBA program] is a culmination of the coursework and the experiences I gained that have given me the confidence to take on any challenge of any size or complexity that I may face over the span of my career,” Pangle said. “The Professional MBA curriculum is rigorous and tests your commitment equally as much as your knowledge. The opportunities offered at the Moore School are limitless.”
