Learn Russian in the EU, established in 2004, is a joint initiative of the Department of Russian and Slavic Linguistics at Daugavpils University and Training Center LatInSoft. Learn Russian in the EU provides a broad range of study programs in the Russian language, literature, culture, history, political science, Eastern European studies, and other areas. 

Daugavpils University, established in 1921, is the foremost academic and research institution in Eastern Latvia. Its Department of Russian and Slavic Linguistics has a long tradition of research and instruction in Russian language and literature. 

Cost: program fee paid directly to host institution + in-country costs

Requirements: 3.0 GPA, undergraduate standing

Upon receiving an application from a student, we prepare a budget proposal and return it for review. After the budget is approved by the student, we send an official program invoice and payment instructions.

Students should also consider additional expenses during the study in Daugavpils:

  • participation fee for excursions and cultural events of your choice;
  • personal living expenses in Daugavpils;
  • additional services, if requested.

Students enrolled to “Learn Russian in the EU” study abroad programs can take academic for-credit courses at Daugavpils University.

Daugavpils University awards European Credit Transfer System (ECTS) credits; the conversion rate for this type of credit is 2 ECTS : 1 USC credit. Students will enroll in 30 ECTS per semester, totaling 15 USC credits. 

For-credit courses for “Learn Russian in the EU” students are provided by English- and Russian-speaking Daugavpils University professors. As a rule, the language of instruction varies from English-only to English/Russian mix and up to Russian-only, depending on the students’ preferences and abilities.

All international students enrolled to Russian-language study abroad programs at DU, regardless their academic level and picked DU courses, are administered through the ‘Eastern European Culture and Business Relations” study program. This originates in DU internal process management. Therefore, all courses listed in the transcripts, issued by DU to students at Russian-language study abroad programs, include a reference to the “Eastern European Culture and Business Relations’ program.

The program offers extensive excursions and social programs which aim at introducing students to the ethnic, historical, and cultural diversity of Daugavpils and Latvia in the context of their historical and contemporary relations with Russia. These can include short trips during working days as well as full-day trips on weekends. 

Per university policy, all UofSC students will be charged emergency medical, evacuation and repatriation insurance for their time abroad. Contact the Study Abroad Office for more details.

Students can choose to stay with Russian host families or in a hotel. The program recommends staying in a private room in a typical local Russian-speaking family, where students can take advantage of a friendly atmosphere to practice using Russian in a relaxed and natural way.

The fall semester runs from September to December. The spring semester runs from February to May. Students can attend for the fall, spring, or academic year.

The program provides students with comprehensive information about the city and university both before arrival and upon arrival.

Latvia is a member of the Schengen Area. This gives 90 days of visa-free stay in Latvia for citizens of the United States, Canada, the European Union, and many other countries. Thanks to the bilateral visa waiver agreement, citizens of the USA can stay in Latvia for an additional 90 days visa-free.
