UofSC's exchange program in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil is designed to expose American students to Portuguese language and Brazilian life, culture, and business practices. A city of 7 million people, Rio de Janeiro offers UpfSC students the opportunity to experience South American culture in a cosmopolitan setting. The program is located at Fundação Getulio Vargas- Escola Brasileira de Administração Publica e de Empresas (Brazilian School of Public and Business Administration: FGV-EBAPE). FGV-EBAPE is located is the suburb of Botafogo, in Rio de Janeiro's "southern zone", near the city's business center. It is also located near the tourist areas of Ipanema and Copacabana.

The majority of courses offered at FGV-EBAPE are taught in Portuguese, but there is a limited selection of courses taught in English each term. Students attending FGV-EBAPE wishing to take courses taught in English will need to be flexible with course selection and be prepared to take some classes in Portuguese. While exact course availability will vary each year, students will likely take a combination of courses in Portuguese, in English, and to fulfill the language minor.

Rio de Janeiro is a major world city, and therefore students should prepare themselves for a higher cost of living. Students pay in-state tuition and fees to UofSC, and will pay housing and living expenses upon arrival. FGV-EBAPE estimates that students need approximately US $1300-$1500 per month for accommodation, food, transportation, entertainment, and similar personal expenses.

Students will earn 12-15 credit hours per semester. FGV EBAPE typically offers a limited selection of courses taught in English, with the majority of coursework being taught in Portuguese. Students may have the opportunity to take a non-credit Portuguese for Foreigners course, offered at the beginning of each semester pending student interest.

Grades at FGV-EBAPE are assigned on a scale of 0-10, with anything below a 6.0 as a failing grade. Generally, there are two exams per semester, and the student's final grade is the average of these two exams. Students may have the option of taking a substitute exam at the end of the term, which can replace a low grade. Attendance is compulsory.

FGV-EBAPE offers a "Buddy Program", in which senior EBAPE students serve as "buddies", volunteering to serve as mentors and guides for new international exchange students. Buddies will help students adjust to life at EBAPE and assist with problems.

Per university policy, all UofSC students will be charged emergency medical, evacuation and repatriation insurance for their time abroad. Contact the Study Abroad Office for more details. Students will be required to submit proof of insurance to FGV-EBAPE prior to arrival.

FGV-EBAPE does not have its own housing, and exchange students must seek private, independent accommodation. International Office staff are not able to search for or secure accommodation on the student's behalf, but they can give help and advice on locating appropriate housing. FGV-EBAPE staff will provide students with a detailed list of privately-owned accommodation resources.

FGV-EBAPE follows the standard South American academic calendar. UofSC students will attend EBAPE during USC's spring semester (EBAPE semester 1). FGV-EBAPE spring semester is generally early February- June. The FGV International Office will provide exact dates, as they change each year.

FGV-EBAPE provides a mandatory orientation day briefing for exchange students upon arrival. Students will be required to arrive at least one week before the beginning of classes in order to participate in orientation. It is important for students to note that FGV-EBAPE has a strict dress code that prohibits shorts, flip flops, t-shirts, and sleeveless tops.

Students who attend FGV-EBAPE for a semester are required to obtain a student visa before departure. The cost for the Brazilian student visa is approximately US $160.00. Students may apply directly through the Consulate, or may wish to use a visa agency. Students cannot apply for the visa until they receive their official acceptance letter from the FGV-EBAPE International Office. Within 30 days of arrival to Brazil, students must register with the Federal Police and will receive further information during orientation.
