Why you chose to pursue your degree within the ASPH: I always knew I wanted to be pre-dental when coming to USC, I always loved going to the dentist growing up and this was a career I found a passion for early on. However, I thought I could only do so as a biology or chemistry major, something I did not have as much interest in. During my orientation I learned about the Arnold School of Public health and the programs offered specific to students at this school. The opportunity for learning outside of the classroom through a practicum and the community which the ASPH fosters drew me in right away. The ASPH has given me the ability to take my required prerequisites while doing so in classes that interest me and in a school that supports my accomplishments. I have always felt that while I am in the Arnold School I have someone that has my back and wants to see me succeed, whether that be my professors, advisor, or fellow students. I hope to one day work as an orthodontist creating smiles that each of my patients are proud to show off, and the ASPH is helping me achieve this goal!
Advice for future students: My advice for future students is to get involved everywhere you can and be open to trying new things! It can be really overwhelming at first having so many options of organizations and activities to join, but just finding something you feel passionate about and getting involved early can make all the difference. Once you find where you belong don’t be scared to try something new, apply for that leadership role or go to the event even if you don’t know anyone. The best experiences sometimes come out of things you were originally afraid to do and can make for great steppingstones to your future career.
