Faculty, Staff and Student Notes

  • Erica Lake was selected for the first cohort of the UofSC Executive Leadership Academy (ELA).
  • Lori Pennington-Gray and Ashley Schroeder visited Caye Caulker, Belize as part of an ongoing project working with key stakeholders to develop a tourism crisis management plan for the island.
  • Ashley Schroeder launched Actionable Advocacy Insights (AAI) as part of her work with HRSM’s SmartState Tourism Center. The five-part series, based on research conducted with Whitney Knollenberg of North Carolina State University, is designed to help tourism industry leaders improve their advocacy planning efforts.
  • Sandy Strick is spending a month on sabbatical in Bordeaux, France, studying a new generation of winemakers and examining philosophy, sustainability, effect of climate change and changing regulations.
  • Cheryl Swanson was named a 2022 All-Star by VenuesNow magazine. Swanson serves as an adjunct instructor in the Department of Sport and Entertainment Management in addition to her primary role as vice president and general manager of the Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center.
  • Scott Taylor was featured in an article on rogue marketing published by the University of Houston.
  • Sport and Entertainment Management student Brian Johnson is completing an internship in Product Marketing with the UFC in Las Vegas, Nevada.
  • Sport and Entertainment Management students Madelin McLean and Madelyn Miller launched the Women in Sport and Entertainment Management student organization with faculty advisor Laura Truell.
  • Master of International Hospitality and Tourism Management student Ashlyn Ooi and Tourism Management student Carla Vaca Pinacho represented HRSM at the International Society of Hospitality Consultants Conference in Prague. Alumna Andrea Belfanti is the CEO for the International Society of Hospitality Consultants.

  • Anna Grace Averett (Retailing - Fashion Merchandising, '18) was featured in a Glamour magazine article on TikTok’s “Three-Word Method.” Averett is host of VERVE the style podcast and an ecommerce site merchandiser with Under Armour.
  • Gabriela Beavers (Sport and Entertainment Management, '19) was promoted to manager of club marketing with the NFL League Office.
  • Madison Benner (Sport and Entertainment Management, '18) was promoted to senior coordinator, ballpark operations andsSecurity with Major League Baseball.
  • Emily Bonvissuto (Retailing, '17) started a new position as retail manager at Coastal Bliss in Hilton Head Island.
  • Josephine (Josie) Catanzarite (Sport and Entertainment Management, '19) began a new position as coordinator of Olympic sport operations for the men’s and women’s track and field, cross country, and women’s tennis team at Rutgers University.
  • Owen Cooper (Sport and Entertainment Management, '22) started a new position as ideation coordinator at Playfly Sports.
  • Mark Driscoll (Sport and Entertainment Management, '09) started a new position as assistant athletic director for ticket operations at Wake Forest University.
