Cierra Pinckney honored for outstanding student advocacy

The College of HRSM is proud to celebrate Cierra Pinckney, the recipient of the annual USC Institutional Academic Advising Award for Outstanding Student Advocacy in Advising.

The work of academic advisors can make a huge difference in the lives of students, but all too often goes uncelebrated. The Outstanding Student Advocacy in Advising award recognizes a member of the USC advising community who demonstrates an exceptional commitment to creating a welcoming and supportive environment for all students and enhancing advising practices to foster student success.

Pinckney came to USC in 2022, working in the University Advising Center before joining the HRSM team in 2023. She also became a Gamecock alum in 2023, earning her master’s degree in public administration. She is a licensed Global Career Development Facilitator, the most notable national credential in the field of career development.

HRSM Assistant Dean of Student Services Kathy Smiling nominated Pinckney for the award, citing her work with first generation students in particular.

"Cierra not only excels in her role as an academic advisor but also collaborates across campus to foster student success. She is deeply committed to ensuring all her students thrive. I have witnessed this dedication firsthand through her involvement with the First-Generation Center," says USC First-Generation Center Director LaNaé Budden.

The news that Pinckney had been selected for the award came at a very busy time of year, with the end of the semester quickly approaching. Perhaps the greatest testament to her impact is the fact that when we reached out to her advisees, they were eager to take time to share what makes her so deserving.

“Cierra has been an amazing advisor from the time I transferred to the college to me now graduating, she kept her word on making sure I stayed on track and is always a great listening ear for students even if she isn’t advising them!”

-Whitley Jones, Hospitality Management and 2026 magna cum laude graduate

“I have gotten a front-row seat to watch Cierra create a space where every single one of her students feels valued and like they are truly worth something. She brings a level of care with her that is special and so big that you would never know if she was going through something herself.”

-Emma Grace Knight, Sport and Entertainment Management

“Cierra has made such a positive impact on my college experience by always being a big supporter of my success. She is not just my academic advisor; she is also a role model to me and someone I truly look up to.”

-Emma Burton, Hospitality Management

“Ms. Pinckney has gone above and beyond to support me, making my academic experience at USC feel incredibly personalized and enjoyable. I’m so thankful for the time, care, and commitment she gives to her advisees.”

-Clare Ehnes, Retailing
