Master of Retail Innovation program honors first graduate

The University of South Carolina’s Master of Retail Innovation program, launched in 2024, has its first graduate.

Elizabeth Moore Fox is the first to complete the program, and was honored as a summa cum laude graduate at the College of Hospitality, Retail and Sport Management’s Degrees of Excellence event Dec. 14 and the university’s commencement ceremony Dec. 15. The celebrations felt familiar for Fox, who completed her bachelor’s degree (magna cum laude) in interdisciplinary studies in services management at USC in December 2024.

“I was born and raised in Winnsboro, South Carolina, but Blythewood has been my hometown for most of my adult life. Our capital city has always felt like a birthplace to me. Growing up here shaped my work ethic, my curiosity, and my drive to lead and innovate. Returning to the University of South Carolina for graduate studies especially as the first graduate of the Master of Innovation program feels incredibly meaningful,” she says.

Fox earned an associate’s degree in fashion merchandising from Midlands Tech in 1992, then began a career which so far spans 19 years in executive-level sales and operations. She has spent much of her professional life leading strategic initiatives, negotiating large-scale contracts, cultivating partnerships, and driving growth in highly competitive markets.

This program challenged me academically, creatively, and personally. It pushed me to think differently, to apply data in meaningful ways, and to explore how innovation, AI, and technology are reshaping the retail landscape.

“Throughout this journey, I’ve learned how to read markets, understand consumer behavior, build relationships, and guide teams through change. I have always loved finding opportunities others might overlook whether through improved processes, emerging technologies, or innovative sales strategies. Those experiences are what ultimately led me back to graduate school,” she says. “The retail landscape is evolving rapidly with artificial intelligence, blockchain technology and new consumer expectations, and I wanted to be at the forefront of that change. The Master of Retail Innovation program was the perfect bridge between my executive experience and my desire to lead in a more data-centered, future-focused way. Becoming the program’s first graduate is something I am incredibly proud of, and it aligns perfectly with the next chapter of my career.”

Fox’s decision to come to USC was driven by both heart and purpose, and proved to be the right choice for her.

“As a South Carolina native, USC has always represented excellence, opportunity, and community. When I first enrolled in the HRSM program, I immediately felt welcomed and supported by faculty who not only taught the coursework, but genuinely invested in my success. That sense of belonging and the high academic expectations made a lasting impact on me,” she says.

As she finished her bachelor’s degree, Fox recognized that with the rapidly changing landscape of retail, deeper study and advanced training would be essential for her continued success. She wanted to be fully prepared to lead an industry shaped by innovation, technology and consumer insight. The Master of Retail innovation program aligned perfectly with her goals, and she now calls it one of the most rewarding experiences of her academic and professional life.

“This program challenged me academically, creatively, and personally. It pushed me to think differently, to apply data in meaningful ways, and to explore how innovation, AI, and technology are reshaping the retail landscape,” she says.

Fox says the entire Department of Retailing faculty (and especially Mike Watson, Joohyung Park, Sang-eun Byun and Terry Kim) were incredibly supportive in the classroom and beyond.

“They challenged my thinking, guided me through complex research, and consistently encouraged me to stretch my abilities,” she says. “Together, they created a powerful support system that made this journey both meaningful and transformative. Their belief in me and their dedication to student success inspired me every step of the way, and their influence will continue to shape my career long after graduation.”

With her master’s degree in hand, Fox plans to continue her career and look for opportunities that blend leadership, strategy and advanced technology. She is passionate about helping organizations evolve, stay competitive, and navigate the future of retail and consumer experiences.

As the first graduate of the new program, she encourages others considering it to say yes to the opportunity.

“The Master of Retail Innovation program is designed for students who want to lead the future of retail, not just understand it. This program will challenge you to think differently, embrace emerging technologies, and step confidently into a rapidly evolving industry,” she says. “If you approach this program with curiosity, openness, and determination, you will leave with far more than a degree. You will graduate with confidence, clarity, and the skill set to lead in a technologically advanced, innovation-centered retail landscape.”

The program is growing, and many will follow in Fox’s footsteps, but there can only be one first.

“Reaching this milestone as the program’s first graduate made the experience even more meaningful.” she says.  “It confirmed that choosing USC and continuing to challenge myself was exactly the right path.”
