USC Quartet-in-Residence is back for recitals, coaching, and outreach

The Grammy Award-winning Parker Quartet will coach high school quartets during Chamber Music Day

The University of South Carolina is fortunate to have the Parker Quartet as USC Quartet-in-Residence. Recently also named the Blodgett Quartet-in-Residence at Harvard University, the world-renowned quartet members Daniel Chong and Ying Xue, violin, Jessica Bodner, viola, and Kee-Hyun Kim, cello, return to Columbia March 24–31 for another week of coachings, master classes and public concerts, including a free concert on Sunday, March 30.

New this year, high school students get an extraordinary opportunity to work with the acclaimed quartet during USC’s Chamber Music Day and Competition on Saturday, March 29. Eight high school quartets from South Carolina, North Carolina and Georgia have been chosen to work with the Parker Quartet and USC faculty. A full day of mentoring, intensive coachings and master classes will culminate in a public performance and competition at 7:30 p.m. The competition’s winning quartet will receive monetary awards, and the audience will participate in the decision to choose the best group.

This semester the Parker Quartet presents outreach “informances” to Irmo High School and Crossroads Middle School in addition to coaching USC chamber music students and presenting master classes, open to the public.

The Grammy Award-winning quartet, formed in 2002, has rapidly distinguished itself as one of the preeminent ensembles of its generation. The New York Times hailed the quartet as “something extraordinary,” and the Boston Globe acclaims their “pinpoint precision and spectacular sense of urgency.”

The quartet began touring on the international circuit after winning the Concert Artists Guild Competition as well as the Grand Prix and Mozart Prize at the Bordeaux International String Quartet Competition in France. Chamber Music America awarded the quartet the prestigious biennial Cleveland Quartet Award for the 2009- 2011 seasons.
