January ’24 Alumni Spotlight – Philip Snyder, ’15 & ’18

Philip Snyder (Master of Music and Doctor of Musical Arts, flute) is Instructor of Flute at the University of Mississippi and Associate Producer at Spoleto Festival USA. We recently caught up with Philip to ask him some questions about his time at the USC School of Music.

Why did you choose the USC School of Music?

For the teacher, Jennifer Parker-Harley

What ensembles did you perform with while at USC?

USC Symphonic Winds; USC Symphony Orchestra; USC Wind Ensemble

What person, course or experience was most influential for you while at the School of Music? How?

Jennifer Parker-Harley's lessons. Classes with Greg Stuart in experimental music - these classes gave me a framework that now governs my approach to life and music making curiously and nonjudgmentally.

How has your education at the USC School of Music helped you in your life and career?

I owe my career to skills I developed while at USC and experiences I gained working for the School of Music.

What is one of your favorite memories, classes, professors or activities while attending the School of Music?

Planning a 24-hour flute performance in 24 different venues around Columbia.

What advice would you give current students or recent graduates pursuing a music performance or music education career?

Create as many opportunities as possible for yourself to explore and get paid for the skills you want to constitute your eventual career. Be curious!

What is one of your proudest professional or personal accomplishments that occurred after graduating from the School of Music in which your education played a role?

Winning my job at the University of Mississippi.

Please share any recent career changes, accomplishments, awards, major life events, etc.

My ensemble was recently in residence at Duke University with composer Michael Hersch and soprano Ah Young Hong.
