May 2026 Alumni Spotlight – Sonya Schumann, ‘10

Dr. Sonya Schumann, ’10, (BM, piano performance) is currently Lecturer of Piano at San Diego State University. She was also recently named to Yamaha’s 2026 40 Under 40 list. We recently caught up with Sonya to ask her some questions about her time at the USC School of Music.

Why did you choose the USC School of Music?

I chose the USC School of Music because it was clear that the faculty and staff were devoted to training and championing their graduates for careers in the field. Each interaction I had with this influential group of pedagogues and professionals strengthened my resolve toward my own goals.

What person, course or experience was most influential for you while at the School of Music?

The Southeastern Piano Festival (presented annually by the USC School of Music) set me on the path I am on today. Attending at age 15, having meaningful experiences with faculty, and meeting future colleagues and life-long friends, it's clear that this unique festival had an unparalleled impact on my life and career. In later years, I had the opportunity to serve as an intern, a junior jury chair, and a guest artist. Events and opportunities like those broadened my understanding and capabilities as a 21st-century musician.

How has your education at the USC School of Music helped you in your life and career?

The support and guidance of the faculty at the USC School of Music shaped my early career attempts, from encouragement to hands-on mentorship. Over a decade has passed since I attended USC as an undergraduate student, and I still mentally replay the lessons I learned there.

What is one of your favorite memories, classes, professors or activities while attending the School of Music?

My favorite memories were of being surrounded by my classmates in our studio class as we supported one another in our musicianship, or in the hours leading up to studio class, where we could find each other wall-to-wall in the piano practice rooms.

What advice would you give current students or recent graduates pursuing a music performance or music education career?

You may not know how the work you're doing now will serve your goals. We change, adapt, and grow (at least we ought to), and some of the ideas you're presented with in this short time may not be applicable right away. Pay attention to them, log them away for another day, and soak up everything you can like a sponge. From time to time, look back on those lessons and see what applies to you now.

What is one of your proudest professional or personal accomplishments that occurred after graduating from the School of Music in which your education played a role?

Since graduating with my terminal degree, I've built or led pre-college programs on the East Coast (Levine Music) and the West Coast (SDSU Community Music School). I'm so very proud to have learned from great pedagogues and master teachers, converging with experiences with incredible administrators, which have allowed me to produce beautiful community partnerships and learning spaces.

What ensembles were you a member of while at USC?

Concert Choir; Garnet Chorale (formerly USC Women's Chorus); University Chorus

What is currently playing on repeat on your Spotify/Pandora/Apple Music, etc.?

Bill Evans' Peace Piece and ABBA's Super Trouper.

Please share any recent accomplishments, major life events, awards, etc.

My husband and I just celebrated our child's first birthday!
